In My Overstimulated Era: How to Combat Overstimulation

In My Overstimulated Era: How to Combat Overstimulation

POV: Loud noises, bright lights, crowded places, or too much information all at once - urgh! 🔊🚨📝

Here are three things I've been doing to combat overstimulation - they’ve been total game-changers, especially the last one!

🐰 Create a “Reset Corner” 📚

You know how kids have time-out spots?

You can have your own grown-up version!

A comfy chair, a corner with your favourite books, or even a bathroom escape where you can close the door and just breathe for a minute.

When life is throwing too much at you, retreat to your “reset corner” and take a few moments to recharge.

No need for elaborate meditation techniques—just a moment of quiet can do wonders.

No space for a reset corner?

A reset box can work wonders, and be great for travel too!

Keep things in it like tools and trinkets that calm you down.

👣 Give Yourself Permission to Run Away 🏃‍♀️

Ever find yourself at a party or in a busy environment and feel like you're about to short-circuit?

It’s okay to bail.

Give yourself permission to step outside, take a walk, or even leave entirely if you need to.

No need to explain yourself or feel guilty.

Just say, "I need a breather," and go get some fresh air or find a quieter place.

Your peace of mind is more important than sticking it out.

🦄 Invent a Secret Code Word 🍍

This one is my favourite!

Pick a fun, quirky word or phrase that instantly tells your brain to chill out when you’re feeling overwhelmed—something like “pineapple mode” or “unicorn break.”

When you feel the overstimulation creeping in, say your code word (even if it's just in your head), and use it as a signal to take a mini mental holiday.

Picture yourself in a silly scenario involving your code word—like lounging under a giant pineapple umbrella or riding a unicorn through a calm, quiet forest.

It’s weird, but it can snap you out of the stress for a moment and give your brain a quick reset!
